A Note About St. Cloud

St. Cloud was founded in 1909 as a retirement community for Union veterans of the Civil War — which is why it’s still called “Soldier City” and why so many of the original streets are named after states. The city sits on the southern shore of East Lake Tohopekaliga, connected to Lake Toho (on the Kissimmee side) by the St. Cloud Canal.

The downtown has gone through a real revitalization in recent years — new brick streets, local restaurants, the monthly farmers market, and places like The Black Squirrel Bookstore & Speakeasy that give it character you won’t find in a strip mall. Lakefront Park is still the heart of the community, with the beach, marina, splash pad, and the gazebo at Dan Tarrell Point where half the town seems to show up for the Fourth of July fireworks.

Meanwhile, the eastern and southern parts of St. Cloud have exploded with new construction — Harmony, the Lakes at Harmony, Harmony West, and all the new communities along Narcoossee Road toward Lake Nona. It’s a different kind of living than the old downtown neighborhoods, but it’s all St. Cloud.
