A Note About Buenaventura Lakes
Buenaventura Lakes has a history unlike anywhere else in Central Florida. Landstar Homes built the first house here in 1978, when BVL was nothing but farmland and cattle along Boggy Creek Road. They marketed heavily in New York, New Jersey, and Puerto Rico — even offering to pay hotel expenses and Disney tickets for prospective buyers who would fly down to see model homes.
It worked. Puerto Ricans came first from the island, then from New York, looking for affordable homes in the sunshine. Today, Puerto Ricans make up about 45% of BVL’s population, and the community has a distinct Caribbean flavor you won’t find in most Central Florida suburbs. Taino’s Bakery serves alcapurrias and mofongo on Buenaventura Boulevard. El Aguila Supermarket stocks everything you’d find in San Juan. The 65th Infantry Veterans Park honors the Borinqueneers — the all-Puerto Rican regiment that served with distinction in Korea.
