A Note About Celebration

Celebration was founded in 1996 as Disney’s experiment in “New Urbanism” — a community designed around walkability, front porches, neighborhood parks, and the kind of small-town atmosphere that’s hard to find in Central Florida. The downtown area around Market Street and Front Street was designed by celebrity architects including Michael Graves (the post office) and Philip Johnson (Town Hall), and even the street signs were designed by the same firm that does Pentagram’s corporate work.

Today, Celebration has about 11,000 residents living in roughly 4,300 homes — everything from bungalows to estate homes to the condos above the shops downtown. The community is famous for its seasonal events: the “snow” falling on Market Street during the holidays, the jack-o-lanterns at Halloween, the Fourth of July parades. Forbes named it one of America’s Prettiest Neighborhoods, and the Urban Land Institute called it “New Community of the Year” back in 2001.

Disney sold off most of its ownership in the early 2000s, though Disney Cruise Line and Disney Vacation Club still have offices in the Celebration Place complex near I-4. The community is now governed by CROA (Celebration Residential Owners Association) and maintains the same architectural standards and community character it was designed with.
